Surprise! There is more to England than just London! Many people are aware that life expands beyond London but don't necessarily consider other such places when they think or talk about the mother country. Scattered with rolling green countryside, small university towns, and castles, England has much more to offer than what meets the eye. England's historical, traditional, and quaint demeanor quickly captured my heart, although the pound conversion was hard to bear at times! However, the endless supply of delicious cider certainly diminished such worries. Previous to the start of my journey, I had no idea just how much I would be so deeply impacted by my time abroad. I encourage everyone young or old to find the time to travel and/or live in abroad - you will learn more about yourself during that time than any other time of your life. While it may not be a suggested stop on a tour of England, Norwich was the town in which the uni(versity) I attended. Constantly looking for a reason to return (including applying for jobs and considering potential graduate programs), I am eager to retreat to a place that has given me so much. And so I give to you my first Travel Tuesday!
Norwich: A Second Place I Call Home - Known as Norfolk county’s only city, Norwich is a delightful crossover of a thriving business and culture center. It is also home to the University of East Anglia where I pursued my studies. A few hours northeast of London along the coast, Norwich reflects the true enchantment that is England – not the main stream that is glamourized in London. Captivating with its narrow cobble-stoned streets, majestic churches, and charming restaurants and pubs, Norwich’s ambiance is both comfortable and inviting. As if directly out of a storybook, the Norwich Market encompasses picturesque ideals of England. With streets lined with shops and sprinkled with assorted nightlife to accommodate all types , Norwich provides much for the tourist, and plenty for the student too. At Christmastime, the streets are particularly magical with its endless strings of lights decorating the town and various store interiors and exteriors. They even have a lighting ceremony to commence the holiday season. Easily maneuvered by walking, Norwich offers a blend of historic interest and modern sophistication. To say the least, Norwich spoiled me with the feelings of a cozy city, embezzled with the tranquility of the countryside.
Below is a quote that I believe is true for anyone who has traveled and/or lived in another place:
"You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be somewhere else. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place."
Until next Travel Tuesday,
